Torvald Sees Portland and Mt St Helens
On May 17th, Eric got the word that he would be going to the Jeopardy Tryouts in Portland Oregon. He'd taken the on-line test in late March and passed the test. Then he was picked from the folks who passed to go to the next stage. The only problem was... the tryout was 9:30 am on a Sunday morning. He didn't have any choice in the matter, he would have to drive down Saturday and spend the night.
After a discussion, we decided to make a weekend of it. We would head down on Saturday, and maybe find something to do in Portland on Sunday. Late in our planning, I suggested that we stop at Mt St Helens if the weather was nice. Eric agreed, and we decided to take Torvald along for the ride.
We left fairly late on Saturday night, and drive straight down to Portland with only a couple of rest stoppages. After checking into our hotel, walking around in the heat to hunt for dinner, and returning to a room with broken AC (which the staff promptly fixed when we told them about it), we didn't have the energy to do much picture-taking with the troll.
After Eric finished the tryouts at around noon, we left the Rose City to go to Mt St Helens. Along the way we stopped for lunch at a place called Whimpy's in Woodland where the hamburgers were simply excellent (as were the fries and malts... yum). Getting to Castle Rock at around 2pm, we started up the Spirit Lake Memorial Highway to Mt St Helens. Along the way I stopped for a picture of this waterfall with Torvald.
